Casey wrapped Sev’s fingers in his and pulled him toward the forest. His mate hadn’t gone foraging since they’d gotten together, and that needed to change. He knew that shifters needed to allow their animals out on occasion in order to maintain a healthy balance between them.
“Where are we going?” Sev asked as he trailed behind Casey.
“You’re going to shift and allow your skunk to find some of those grubs he loves so much.” Casey was proud of the way he’d been able to say it without throwing up. Grubs. Ick.
“But we have plenty of food at home,” Sev reminded him.
Casey turned around and tucked Sev in against him. “Are you telling me your other half hasn’t been clawing to get out? I know he loves the forest, and I can’t believe he doesn’t want the opportunity to explore.”
Sev bit his lip, then nodded. “He’s been wanting out for weeks, but he’s been torn about being away from you. After all we went through, he’s become very protective of you.”
Casey kissed Sev lightly. “The feeling is mutual. And that’s why we’re going together. I can pick some grasses and you can have a snack.”
Sev threw his arms around Casey and dragged him into a deeper kiss. “Thank you for being so understanding.”
“You’re my mate. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you. Please tell me you know this.”
“I do, and if you want, I’ll even share my grubs with you.”
Casey’s stomach clenched, then Sev laughed.
“I hate you,” Casey gritted out.
The forest was alive with all sorts of sounds, and Casey watched as Sev stripped, then shifted, compressing from his human form to the slightly larger than average skunk. His hair ruffled as the breeze blew across, and Casey couldn’t help the pride that filled him, knowing that this was his lover.
Sev waddled off into the forest and Casey knelt down, carefully selecting some tender blades of grass and bits of rich earth. It was paradise here, there was no doubt about it.
When he’d filled his pouch, Casey glanced up and noticed the sun had begun its slide down toward the horizon. He hadn’t realized it had gotten so late. As he packed up his things, he noticed movement in the bushes as a skunk broke free of the trees and made its way toward him. Casey pulled out Sev’s clothes, and began moving closer to his lover, when he realized his mistake. The skunk glared at him and hissed a warning, then turned around, stamped his feet, and lifted the bushy tail, before a foul odor engulfed Casey, making it difficult to breathe. His eyes watered and he choked, sliding down to the ground as the skunk rushed back into the forest. A few moments later, Sev came out of the trees in all his glorious beauty, even if Casey couldn’t see through the tears in his eyes.
“What happened?” Sev demanded.
“S-s-skunk,” Casey stuttered.
“You let him spray you?”
“I thought it was you.”
“Well,” Sev snapped, “I’m so glad you know the difference between me and a common skunk.”
Casey scrubbed at his eyes, desperate to get them clear.
Sev sighed. “Come on, let’s get you home so you can clean up.”
“You’re not mad?” Casey asked as he struggled to his feet.
“I’m furious, but that doesn’t mean I won’t take care of you first. I’ll just make you suffer later.”
They began the slow walk home, when Casey noticed Sev wasn’t with him. He turned and watched as his mate stepped back.
“Why don’t you go on ahead,” Sev said. “I’ll follow at a safe distance. I don’t meant this to be harsh, but you stink.”
Casey laughed. He knew Sev would forgive him, even if it took some begging on his knees. And while he was down there, he’d work hard to earn back the smile that made Casey’s heart flutter.
“Yes, Flower. And Sev? I love you.”
Sev chuckled. “I love you, too."

Excerpt:
“This night is shot,” Casey mumbled. “Hakii, if you’re there, I’m sorry. I need to find him. I’ll try to be back as soon as I can. Oh, and if you’re not there, I hope you’re getting a damn good laugh at me talking to myself.”
The night air had chilled considerably. Casey threw on a sweater and hurried to the Alpha’s house. Before he could pound on the door, it swung open. Jake stood there wearing nothing at all.
“Oh god, my eyes.”
Jake sighed. “You’ve seen me before. A lot, if I recall correctly.”
“And every time I do, I remember that I need to create eye bleach.”
Jake faked a laugh. “Yeah, you’re hilarious. What do you want?”
“A guy came to my house tonight. His name is Sev, and I think he’s in trouble.”
All humor fled from Jake’s face. “What happened?”
Casey told him about the visit. “He…called me his mate. What the hell is that about?”
“Later. We’ve got to find him.”
In an instant, Jake transformed into a beautiful black jaguar. Zak came rushing to the door. “What is wrong?”
Before Casey could answer, Zak grabbed a heavy coat and squirmed into it. “Jake will track him. You will come with us.”
“Zak, he called me his mate. Why would he do that?”
“You worry about this now? I do not see where this matters. If you prefer, you may stay behind.”
Casey sobered immediately. “No, you’re right. I’m sorry.”
They tracked Jake as he hurried to the woods. When they heard him roar, Zak and Casey ran to the edge of the forest. Jake had transformed back to his human form and, man, was he pissed.
“Come out here, now,” he demanded.
There was no movement, but Casey heard a clicking noise, followed by the familiar stamping of feet.
“You spray me and I swear to the gods I will neuter you. Put your damn tail down and face us as a man, Sev.”
